Relationship to Canary Islands early settlement. Some authors have posited that the first inhabitants of the Canary Islands were brought to the Canaries by Romans, who may have been interested in further extraction of the prized purple dye. However archaeological data from La Palma suggest the first Berber inhabitants arrived circa 500 BC, somewhat before Roman acitivity in the locale. Furthermore there is no evidence to suggest a shortage of the purple dye, given the production at Mogador, Crete and other sites. C. Michael Hogan, PhD.
