Re: Hakon's Mound (Preesall) by Anonymous on Sunday, 11 August 2019

I know the site well. It cannot be natural feature as all the surrounding land is mainly flat and historically marsh land. There is an old House (Parrox Hall) circa 300m from the site so the thought that it could have once been a garden feature is not impossible. Perhaps there are records in the hall archives which may help? The excavations required to erect the 1st World War memorial cross on top of the mound must have been significant and I doubt whether the workforce could have resisted the temptation to excavate more than was strictly required to complete the job. It would be interesting to read any contemporary records of this. However, I like the idea that it is the last rest of an ancient Viking King. The land around Preesall and Knott End in ancient days would have been very different to what it is now. It was once a labyrinth of wild estuarine gullies .... just the place to hide the burial mound of your beloved King and the treasures that are to accompany him into the afterlife???

Something is not right. This message is just to keep things from messing up down the road
