Just to mention I've come across the word 'grotesque' which is commonly applied to gargoyles (as used in church architecture). My understanding of the meaning of the word is 'ugly; comic; distorted; bizarre; fantastic; or fanciful'. It especially applies to human faces and the figures of animals, etc, so perhaps grotesque might be applied to this weird and wonderful mask. Great find!
