Comments on the 2nd episode
It is becoming obvious after just two episodes that the method of choosing a chief was completely wrong. It seems that the original motivation was that the team wanted a mother figure, a comforter, and this is back-firing on them. Anne, for all her good intentions is not a leader, nor aggressive enough to meld together this group of survivors. Just because she has grey hair, a friendly smile and a good nature does not qualify her as a leader. She is proving that her condesending nature is inappropriate for the role she has accepted. Unfortunately husband Dave, is as weak willed and almost subservient to his wife's faults.
Nik, the quitter, didn't last long and after one hard day of work, collapsed in a sweating heap and decided it was not for him...but at least he had the guts to say he'd had enough.
I can see Bill and Yashmin coming to blows with Anne and Dave, while the rest of the group follow along like lost sheep. How many others of the group have enforced their thoughts upon the rest of the group? The younger members are already bemoaning the lack of chocolate and cake...and makeup, did they expect such luxuries in an Iron Age settlement?
Poor Big Chris, he wants to be an Iron Age traveller, a retro-hippy. But he is the only one who is adopting the lifestyle and culture of the age. He celebrated the Autumn Equinox, as his forebearers would have done, he appreciates the nature, the energies of the settlements, he is fast becoming the bard...the storyteller.
Of course, much of the stay there is a steep learning curve for the group, they have to devise ways of doing each task, of managing their daily lives and of living together as a unit. But the biggest shock of this episode was the meeting in which Yashmin apologised for her conduct. Would the chief of such a settlement have allowed the family to stay and disrupt the rest of the settlement? I think not!
I hope we see the group embracing the culture, forgetting the 21st century way of life and accepting this unique opportunity to live what is a hard life, but a very basic, natural way of life.
I will watch the next episode with great interest.
