The approach in my school is to have a reply slip at the beginning of each school year where parents can indicate whether they allow images of their child to be used in press stories, school brochures and wall displays etc. Only a handful of parents do opt out (for whatever reason: remember that some children are 'in hiding' from estranged parents who would take them away if they knew where they were) and this has the bizarre consequence that in the photos of sports teams on the walls certain faces are obscured by sticky labels.
On a slightly different track: whats the deal with fuzzing out car registration plates in photos? Is this a legal issue?
