Just how many more survivalist programmes do we have to watch? Do the producers think we derive some ghoulish pleasure from watching people suffer in order to get back to basics? Of course they do! And we do, no matter how much we deny any such feelings.
However, I sometimes wonder just how the participants are selected. Most are either city business people or failed hippies, all who see the world of survival through rose tinted glasses. This was clearly demonstrated in the BBC documentary where a group were dumped on a remote scottish island for a year...a year which they survived very well.
Once they dispense with the democratic ideas of selecting a leader and voting on everything, the whole thing seems to run more smoothly.
I watched the first episode of the Iron Age programme and was left with just a collection of questions. Surely, in order to recreate an Iron Age settlement there should have been a chief...not an elected one, but a forceful and even aggressive person who would sit with a group of elders to determine everybodys' position within the heirarchy of the settlement? Also, where were the hunters of the group, the warrior clan? Why was the programme limited to 7 weeks, with a known time span the members knew they only had to survive for that time and then it would be all over? Were they given basic lessons in survival, an important point considering just how out of touch we all are in this modern society?
Anyway, I will watch the next instalment with great interest and hope some of my questions will be answered.
