I'm doing a school project about gravel pits in Oxfordshire and I was wondering whether anyone had any interesting information about them. In particular what kind of machinery is used to extract the gravel and I'm particularly interested in the gravel pits in Dorchester. I would also like to know why people object to the extraction of gravel - what are the main problems with it? Surely it's not that bad for animals and birds because although they are got rid of by the initial work on the gravel pits, once the pit becomes disused and fills with water, the area is usually turned into a nature reserve. Please reply.
