Re: Thornborough latest - call for 'Exclusion zone' protect ancient site by Anonymous on Friday, 29 April 2005

Godfrey Jones.

I visited the Thornborough site last year and was appalled to see an open and working landfill site within a few hundred metres of the largest henge . It would seem that there are old quaries in the area, but this surely cannot be allowed to continue.

I have a theory about henges , that the ditches would originally have filled with water and be part of the design- a sort of "water -feature."
The water table presently is lower, but the monument lies in a low alluvial river valleyand would have flooded. Other simmilar sites occour at Dorchester and Sutton Courtenay in Oxfordshire .The association of early Bronze Age sites with water would be a fruitful avenue of research. Any offers of help or interest would be appreciated.-contact me at "[email protected]
