This page is suffering some confusion due to the vague map reference: NJ 630 250 refers not to one point but to a whole map square; by adding 2 digits to the 3-digit easting (630) and northing (250), the reference can be made to fit any location within the map square which extends up and right from the point NJ 63000 25000. Within this square the 1870 OS map shows 2 stone circle sites -
The Newton (or Blue Butts) Stone Circle ("Site of") is shown at NJ 6351 2503* -
"About AD 1835 a stone circle comprising 7 or 8 stones was removed. Underneath one of the stones a cist was found containing a few bones and some black earth." Name Book 1867 (per RCAHMS).
(I previously posted about this and referred to 'an 1867 OS map' but since all the OS maps of this area are dated 1870 I must be mistaken.)
The Broomend (or Overhall) Stone Circle ("Site of") appears at NJ 6330 2579*, immediately S of a now-vanished quarry on Broomend Farm. The Google Earth image of this location appears to show a very faint circle mark at the exact point on the ground, by a farm track on the edge of woodland - but so faint it may well be wishful thinking; according to RCAHMS the construction of the track obliterated the site. Although it is impossible to say without a site visit (and maybe some tree clearance!), this might be yet another circle with a view of Dunnideer Hill; intriguingly, a direct line from this site to the summit of Dunnideer looks as if it may pass through Wantonwells Stone Circle.
"[These standing stones] were described in 1867 by the OS surveyors as a stone circle 'composed of four stones, three of which have been broken up for various purposes and the fourth can still be seen ... built into a wall close by. Underneath one of them a recess was found, in form exactly like the stone cists but rather larger, which was filled with ashes' (Aberdeenshire 1870, xliv; Name Book, Aberdeenshire, No.75, p.12) ... Burl and Ruggles have both listed Broomend as a possible recumbent stone circle, though the latter has also expressed his doubts. With only four stones recorded and no mention of any large slab that might have been a recumbent, there are certainly no grounds for such an identification." Just to add more confusion, the 1870 OS shows another circle site which is not far from the Broomend circle site but just outside this map square -
The Westside (or Westfield) Stone Circle ("Site of") appears at NJ 6283 2552* on Westside Farm, close to the site of St.James Chapel and graveyard.
"A stone circle was removed about 1842 from this spot. Nothing of interest was found." Name Book 1867 (per RCAHMS)
*NB: Records of this area refer to the village or kirkton of Premnay which is now shown on maps as Auchleven (while road signs show both or either of the names).
