Re: The Butter Cross (Cheddleton) by MALBOLL on Sunday, 27 November 2011

The Cheddleton Butter Cross or 'Challinor Cross' is situated in a field at the junction of two footpaths at approx 988523. The base and shaft appear to be much older than the crowning cross. The monument bears the inscription "THIS ANCIENT CROSS WAS RESTORED IN 1990 WILLIAM R. CHALLINOR. It appears to have been in this location for a very long time: It is shown on the 1879 OS map and the Topographical Dictionary of England (1848, pp. 562) says "At a field near Ferny hill is the shaft ofa very ancient cross, eleven feet high, standing on three circular stone steps". One of the footpaths appears to be an ancient holloway and the cross may well be in its original position. A small fragment of another cross can be seen in a private garden approximately 1km North at the crossroads at Cheddleton Heath (987533). A local legend maintains that horses will not pass this spot after dark.

Something is not right. This message is just to keep things from messing up down the road
