There have been many instances where bastions were constructed as part of a palisade or barrier by indigenous Americans during the Mississippian period (abt. 900 AD-1500 AD). Of these, besides the site mentioned above, are Huff Village in North Dakota, Aztalan in Wisconsin, Cohokia in Illinois, the Potomac Creek site in Virginia, and the Etowah mounds site in Georgia.
