History is not about what happened and neither is pre-history. History is about the interpretation of selective events as recorded by contemporary chroniclers. Pre-history is more honest in that it admits to interpretation of that which is excavated - It sometimes builds too much upon finds and ignores what has perished.
History in schools is now politically correct dynamite! Look at how the history of World war II is taught in schools in Britain, USA , France, Germany and Russia. None will be objective and all will give a spin to maximise national glory and minimise national shame - whole episodes will be ignored, others will be distorted. As I say - it is not about what really happened.
Prehistory in primary schools? With so many primary school children now being from ethnic communities originating elsewhere - should pre-history be about long barrows in Britain or the cities of Sumer and Mohenjo-Daro?
Teach a common pre-historic culture or make a comparitive study? - for primary school children????
Primary school for me was great - it taught me to read and write and do simple arithmetic - no history or geography at all! Secondary school was a complete waste of time and I remember nothing of history, geography, physics, chemistry, maths. I left as soon as I could and the public library became my university - today it would be the internet. What little I know of pre-history is self taught and gleaned from the excellent Megalithic Portal. Children will find their own way without bureaucratic bungling from educationalists who are constantly re-vamping the educational system and constantly getting it wrong.
