Looking at this subject exposes us to the very real recent, and not so recent, bloody histories of England and the USA, and the world. Horrific stuff! How dare we, the inheritors of the past, bare our heads, look at history, accept all that is in our history, without shame? Well, we just should look.
It matters not one jot to those past, but it matters a great deal to us now. And it matters a great deal more if we do not. It may be that the stones that we/I so reverence on this site were sites of blood offerings, it may be that they were sites of despicable horror. So? We cannot change the past, but what is available to us all is the future, if we reverence these stones, if we take them to our hearts, even with and in the blood of the past, are we not part of a living history that can work these things out?
Being informed by the past, even speculation of an uninformed or unwritten past, is not the same as anything we might achieve, be, or desire to be.
Someone light a candle, because I don't do night lights.
It is worth remembering that history in schools is written by those who want to MAKE history, and not by those whose choose to study it and know it, or even bear with it and bear it.
Are our children informed? I abhor the invasion of Iraq. It eats at me that we have done this. But what will history report, what will history make of my country invading a nation that made no aggressive move on another nation, and how will I vote in the forth coming election in MY country?
History is littered with rotten stuff, ugly stuff, and is rewritten poorly and just as rottenly.
No one will ever know why megaliths were built. Why Avebury (my personal fascination) why Stonehenge, why any megaliths?
Perhaps an honest history will talk of genocide, and perhaps the very stones that we visit could tell us something about genocide. Or something else. I think it is about something else that remains their attraction, but we don't know. Eh?
Something is not right. This message is just to keep things from messing up down the road
