Re: What *IS* happening to Silbury Hill? by Anonymous on Wednesday, 09 May 2001

Can I just point out that according to the National Trust and English
Heritage websites Silbury Hill is still closed due to Foot and Mouth. This
could mean that the car park, any footpaths and the land around are closed.
I don't know what is happening re Silbury, but I would suggest that a
properly investigated solution is preferable to a panic measure that causes
more damage in the long run, even if it takes longer to implement initially.
It certainly sounds as if the problem at Silbury is quite complex and it is
important that the structure ( ie the location and dimensions of shafts,
holes, fissures etc) is known before an engineering solution can be found.
It is not unknown for the conservation measures of the past to cause greater
damage years later (I'm thinking of the Italian chapel which had its roof
strengthened with concrete which then caused greater damage years later when
an earthquake hit). On the whole, Britain has a pretty good record for not
creating greater problems with conservation measures - not perfect, but then
no country has been perfect in this respect.
