A lot of children *do* get some prehistory at school - but only as a necessary precursor to the Romans. English curriculums tend to look at Boudica, while the Welsh often study Caractacus.
As someone in both Roman and Prehistoric camps, I agree that prehistory should be studied more in its own right. The Romans indeed brought new technology and ways with them, but the technology and ways of life pre-Roman stand up in their own right. Though I am sure I preach to the converted!
