The ancient British tribes of what is now southern Scotland were called The Damnonii, Novantae, Selgovae and Votadini. These British tribes spoke a language now recalled as "old welsh"
The author Alistair Moffat has written a fantastic book, "Arthur and the Lost Kingdoms" which is based on these tribes, and well worth a read for anyone interested in the pre and post roman history of Southern Scotland and Northern England.
