I live on the edge of the Peak Park and often wonder what hidden stories lie beneath the earth. This is an important find and it seems a pity that the quarry building could not be situated elsewhere and the 'village/settlement' reconstructed to teach children more about their ancestry.
It is a similar story in Dove Holes where they do not realise what they have with the Bullring Henge and barrow. I find it a place of huge significance and visit frequently. During a morning or evening mist the henge appears to be enormous, smoky tendrils of fog carry the spirits of the ancestors and with the locals wood fires sending a scent that is almost timeless across the rampart one could imagine one has slipped back into a forgotten time.
The henge is so, so unprotected it is sacrilige. Adults fly models aircraft, kiddies sledge, dog owners allow their charges to defecate and fail to clear it and every year the henge is trampled as folk use it to get a good view of the village bonfire!
The caretaker told me it should have been bulldozed and flattened long back when the housing development went up.
I wrote to the primary school and parish council and did not gain any ackowledgement. Shame!
