I've read a little of The Old Straight Track (before I had to return it to the library - must remember to get it out again) and saw no suggestion that Watkins thought lays were mystical in any way. He seemed to be suggesting that they were just tracks people used to move around the landscape. The various ancient sites are 'linked' by the leys because they were convenient landmarks which travellers could see from a distance and by which they could navigate.
Has anyone read all of the book? Have I got the right idea? I was finding it really interesting but won't borrow it again if it's going to go all magical
