The original fireballs came from the sky.They were from the second ball game of Hunahpu and Xbalenque, as the gravity of the blue star pulled them closer and then released them with some of its debris (fireballs or meteorites). The whole story is found in the Popol Vuh, That is what the sky game is all about.
For the men to re-create the event as an earth game is fine, but dangerous. The players are not gods and are not passing comets named Hunahpu and Xbalenque.
But all the game says is that the researchers haven't got a clue as to the story, but the natives have never been convinced of the new religion. Their ancient gods still live.
