Re: Your experiences of the Winter Solstice at Newgrange and elsewhere by Anonymous on Tuesday, 28 December 2004

A small group of people gathered at the recently discovred alignment at Baltray, Co. Meath at the mouth of the river boyne that flows past Newgrange. The stone is aligned to a small island off the coast, standing directly in front of the stone and looking along its south ege, it points directly at the Island and the spot where the sun rose circa 5,000 years ago.

This year we had a beautiful sunrise delayed only for a few minutes by a cloud bank on the horizon. Afterwards we went on to Newgrange for a quick visit inside the tomb as the sun left the chamber, then on to Loughcrew and Dowth among other places. By evenings end a heavy covering of cloud and a few misplaced trees meant the sundown alignment at Dowth was much less spectacular but overall it was a superb solstice in the Boyne Valley.

Some photos of the day (including inside Newgrange and the Baltray alignment) are posted at my gallery here.
