-More than 200 people visited the John Gilbert Reese Center on Saturday afternoon to celebrate Newark Earthworks Day 2009. For some of the participants, it was the first time they had ever heard of the earthworks.
"I'm just astounded this is here," said Rachel Lee, a graduate student at Ohio State University's main campus who came to the event as part of a cultural diversity class. "I've lived in Ohio my whole life, and I never encountered anything to let me know these were here."
The point of Newark Earthworks Day is to teach the public about the mounds, said Richard Shiels, director of the Newark Earthworks Center and assistant professor of history at OSU-Newark.
"We want to educate as many people as we can," he said.
The fourth annual event is the centerpiece of a week of programming that began with the Walk with the Ancients on Oct. 10. An open house will be today at the Octagon Earthworks.
