The article on the damage done by the Dakar Rally and 4WD enthusiasts implies that the figures, like those on the Nazca plains of Peru, can only be appreciated from the air. From the numerous ground based photos on Googlemaps, its fairly obvious that a large percentage of the Chilean geoglyphs can be seen from the ground. Most of the figures are executed on hillsides and figures of humans and animals all seem to have an "up" and "down" corresponding to the hillside.
