How elequently put and you can transpose those sentiments to England, Wales & Scotland too.
Why do the people in charge equate tradition and culture with being old-fashioned? We really do have to define what is the kind of future we want for our descendants. The planners of the 60s had a vision of the future, and look what a mess that left us with. Preservation of the past is NOT incompatable with modernisation. But modernisation has to respect and acknowledge the past. You do not modernise by the wholesale destruction of the past.
Nor does preservation of the past mean placing our history in aspic. These sites should be preserved in their environmental context and opened to people to enjoy and wonder at. Much of our built environment could be preserved and found new uses for. Just to demolish an old town house to make way for more concrete and glass is not good enough. We have to use imagination and ingenuity to incorporate the old with the new.
Something is not right. This message is just to keep things from messing up down the road
