New evidence of prehistoric man in north east Wales
EVIDENCE of human activity dating back nearly 10,000 years has been discovered in north east Wales.
Analysis of a sample of earth extracted from the Moel Llys y Coed, near Cilcain, in the Clwydian Range, has helped archaeologists paint a picture of the area during the Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age periods.
The project, which involved analysis techiniques including pollen levels and radio carbon dating, was funded by the Royal Commission on the Archaeological Historical Monuments of Wales.
Evidence of burning in the Mesolithic age (8000-4000BC), shows that the land could have been used for hunting, and experts say the heat from the fires would also have encouraged the growth of hazel, providing nuts for people to eat.
There is also evidence of the area being used for animal grazing, and that people were beginning to cultivate cereals in the Neolithic period (4000-2200BC), and the first signs of the heather, which covers the Clwydian Range today, were also discovered and is thought to have started growing in the Bronze Age (2200-750BC).
Signs of the clearance of the area during this period could be linked to the building of huge hill forts, which still tower above the neighbouring valleys.
The discoveries have been made as part of an ongoing multi-million pound scheme, called the Heather and Hillforts Project.
