Do you have any information on the repatriation of these remains? In doing an initial check on this story there seems to be no individuals or groups, other than Joe Madonia, who is attempting to bring these particular remains back to Arkansas. I've also been unable to initially determine if the original burial location is still available for a re-interment. Does anyone have information on the current state of the Helena Crossing Mounds?
Arkansas is one of the few states I've visited where area near ancient mounds has been set aside for the use of re-interment of repatriated remains. Although my understanding is that many of the repatriated remains have been reburied on private lands by native caretakers - especially if the original location is now a publicly accessible park.
One might also reflect on the displays of Old World grave goods and even human remains in Old World institutions. Although I won't deny that racism (overt or not) has been a factor in cases like this. And nothing has trumped the destruction of "sacred interment" like economic development.
