Re: Extreme Archaeology hits Channel 4 by Anonymous on Sunday, 25 July 2004

All this criticism regarding the new C4 show. These are archaeological sites which have never been studied due to their difficult terrain, and will probably never be studied as their environmental conditions are slowly destroying the archaeology.

Surely it is better to have shows like these to investigate these sites, or would you rather have the archaeology never studied and lost for all eternity? At least someone is prepared to attempt and find out more about these sites, rather than simply criticising the difficulty in accessing the sites or those prepared to do so.

As for having the three main archaeologists as women, have you not studied the archaeology admissions statistics lately? Back in the 18th and 19th centuries, archaeology was a gentleman's leisure pursuit. But today in the 21st century, more and more women are getting involved in archaeology, with some universities admitting more women than men onto their archaeology courses. I'm afraid the days of having just men study the archaeology have gone. You should be pleased that there are still people in the world that want to record our historical past before it is destroyed. I suppose the guys that criticise the women on the C4 show are somehow threatened that women may take over the world, which makes them feel inferior. Well, get used to modern society and stop criticising those people wanting to get involved with archaeology.

And if you are wondering, I am a guy.
