I thought I should send another comment in as I am now at the email address of [email protected]. I haven't any more to add to the report above other than the stones are still there... There is a roman about 150 yards away. Other sarcens are found on the lane leading to this road (of which no traces remain above ground). Most stones are sited on property boundaries going up towards Tunworth Down from the centre of Mapledurwell. The name apparently means the pool or spring of the maple trees. This would be a pre-norman name but post celtic. The spring referred to, however is rather more interesting: it is right next to the church. In fact the church yard edges on to it, and the pool is still there, with trees around it, though I don't know whether they are maples!
