There is no justification for leaving those stones unexcavated and unseen - it goes right against the grain of everything which has been happening at Avebury since at least the Cunningtons in the early 1900's, a tradition of restoration which also saw West Kennet Long Barrow utterly restored in the mid 1950's (that's two decades after Avebury's entire restoration was interrupted by ww2). The more of the monument we see the more we are going to understand about it and the people who built it, which I thought was the whole point of archaeology, anyway - 'understanding the past'?
