andy - a whirlwind tour of 8 sites by 'interested parties' is hardly a representative study presenting 'field-data'.
i recommend you visit the july 30th newsletter of SAFE - http://www.savingantiquities.org where Dr ElizabethC.Stone has studied satellite pictures of 1,900+ sites in S.Iraq, 700+ in detail, 26% of which were recently damaged extensively. a total of 16 sq kilometers has been destroyed - more than has ever been excavated there - mostly on the outskirts of centres of contemporary population where there is access to "a large workforce" to use the mechanical diggers. note the detailed data made publicly available.
'so much' looting of sites in iraq. it's staggering.
