I have just seen the new Stonehenge Management Plan consultation document http://www.stonehengeconsultation.org/WHS_Management_Plan_Summary.pdf.
The only thing that really matters is to remove traffic from the area. This will only ever happen in a brutal manner, and would have to be done by closing the A303 at new site entry points at Longbarrow Crossroads and at Amesbury, and the A344 at Airman’s Corner. If we were to imagine that a natural disaster had effected this, minds would be immediately focused on finding alternatives. The most important one would be that traffic would re-adjust itself. Buses could then provide access to the site, and between destinations either side.
I am aware that this is totally simplistic and that there are many practical objections, such as the roads through Larkhill and Salisbury, but none of these should be insoluble on a ‘disaster’ basis. The Visitor Centre should be relocated to one or more of the new site entry points and there be free access on foot to what would become at a stroke a majestic site worthy of its UNESCO designation.
Everything else follows from this, plus a little of the common sense that is all rather ‘dressed up’ in the Plan.
Who is the leader of the campaign?
