I have a suspicion that the reason hominids became upright was because it was an evolutionary advantage to be able to raise upright every now and again to be on the look out for lions. The ones who did this more often stood a less change of being eaten than ones that raised less often. I think the greatest threat to early developing man were lions of the African savanna.

With the development of upright walking, this freed the hands which led to tool making. And the hand is what led to a bigger brain. A more manipulative hand required a bigger brain and a bigger brain meant that a more manipulative hand could function. The development of the brain and hand went hand in hand, or rather 'hand in brain'.

Infant carrying was essentially a by product of upright walking and a finely developed hand.
