Practicality promotes the number three. Its the next step after doubling. Ancient Egypt's earliest metrology is built on multiples of three which proceeds from a very odd way of looking at numbers, First you extract 2/3 of a number and then you halve it. It evolved from the fact that we have three fingers of more or less equal width, not four. Its weird by our reckoning but resulted in seeing threes, thinking in threes, and reducing everything, no matter how complex into one of the two fractions and that's despite whether the coincidences were correct or not.
