Thanks for great article, Captain; I'm in Devon a lot and will search this one out.

I wonder, though, if it really would be 'impossible' to put this back in some kind of order. Technically, stones can be pinned and bonded with modern materials and (and it's a big 'and') if all the bits can be found. Even if only 'most of the bits' can be found it may well be worth a go. Normally, though, the cost of doing it and the unwillingness of the landowner would militate against this happening. But here there is a known culprit for the destruction but also one who has technical expertise and a good reason to do something that generates good PR. I wonder if it would be worth approaching the MoD and asking them if they wanted to restore the site as a partnership between some suitably important Archaeologists (take your pick) and, say, the Army's 'university' at Shrivenham. It would be fab PR for them and worthwhile for everyone else. What do you think...?
