There is loads on this topic in 'Collapse' by Jared Diamond'. The book discusses what factors contribute to the collapse of a society, and compares quite a few very differnt societies, some of which survived, and some of which have completely disappeared, like the Anasazi. I am only halfway through the book, and it is not a quick read, but it is well written and fascinating.
