PEELING BACK THE LAYERS: THE
NEOLITHIC AND BRONZE AGE
LANDSCAPE AROUND MAIDEN
CASTLE
A guided tour of Maiden Castle and its
environs, focusing on the ‘hidden’ parts of
Maiden Castle and its environs: the enigmatic
bank barrow, the causewayed enclosure and
nearby long barrows of the Neolithic period
and the extensive Bronze Age barrow
cemeteries of the South Dorset Ridgeway.
See geophysical surveys in action on one of
the less visible Neolithic long barrows close
to Maiden Castle - hoping to reveal detail of
the extent and form of a plough-degraded
barrow allowing the original form of the
barrow to be better understood.
Accompanied by a poster display on the use
of geophysical techniques in archaeology in
the car-park area.
15 July 2 pm to 3.30 pm
