Parking warning for solstice revellers
CARS parked illegally in Avebury and surrounding villages during next month's Summer Solstice celebrations are likely to be towed away, revellers have been warned.
New car parking arrangements will come into force this year for the celebrations at the historic stone circle on June 20/21.
The National Trust has banned high-sided vehicles including campervans, caravans and motorhomes from its car park in Avebury, to stop it being used as a temporary campsite.
In co-operation with Wiltshire Police, Kennet District Council, Avebury Sacred Sites Forum and Avebury Parish Council, the agency has limited access to its car park.
Revellers are being advised to use public transport to reach the village, as on-road parking is not allowed in Avebury or nearby Beckhampton, West Kennet and Winterbourne Monkton.
Anyone parking illegally is being warned to expect a fixed penalty notice or risk having their vehicle towed away.
Scott Green, National Trust property manager for Avebury, said: "We hope all those planning to attend Solstice on the night of 20 June have a peaceful and enjoyable time and respect the village, surrounding areas and the World Heritage site."
Trust officials will be handing out Conditions of Entry details, which warns revellers not to climb on the stones, light fires or pitch tents. Fireworks and amplified music is also banned.
The National Trust said it is working towards a medium-term solution to parking and camping at Avebury.
