There is loads of this stuff on ebay so buyers beware, the chances are that you will get ripped off. I often look for fun at what is available and am amazed at the antics of unscrupulous sellers who seem to be making a good income from gullible punters. For instance there is no such thing as a neolithic handaxe, these date from the paleolithic, yet this is a favourite description. I have even seen pictures of unworked lumps of broken flint marketed as artefacts. A simple rule of thumb is that if there is no proven provenance for an item it is likely to be of dubious antiquity or possibly illegally removed from a site. The latter is very likely from overseas sellers, particularly as many archaeological sites are being looted & you may be committing a criminal offence if you import some genuine items without official permission. The answer is simple. Don't buy any of this stuff at all! Ultimately it is the buyers who are responsible for the looting of sites. There would not be a market if there were no buyers & genuine material would be more likely to end up in museums where everybody could share in what should be a common heritage.
