Frozen Fritz (Oetzi)
The Stone Age ice man known as Oetzi (Fritz) was a frozen caveman found on the
border of Austria and Italy. He was discovered by the Simons couple when they went on
their normal hiking route. The couple says they want a finders fee of $120,000 dollars,
but no one has paid yet.
The main concern is whether Fritz belongs to Austria or Italy. After looking at the
map, both sides concluded the find was made in Austria. Fritz is being kept at a museum
built to display Fritz’s remains. The iceman draws about 150,000 tourists and $4.9
million annually to Bolzano.
The mummy, which weighs just over 14kg, has been losing five grams per day, since
the day he arrived. Experts hope a new location will cause the mummified remains to
only drop six grams per month.
Oetzi is the world’s oldest and best-preserved mummy, believed to be 5,300 years old.
Experts are trying to determine how Oetzi died. Some experts believe Oetzi was in a
boundary dispute with several individuals and that the Copper Age male received his first
wound as early as 48 hours before his death. According to some experts, the iceman shot
two different people with his arrow. Each time managing to retrieve the arrow from his
victim. The success was short lived, since he missed his last target and was shot in his left
shoulder, and left to die.
