Avebury the complete circle
In the February issue of Living History magazine, I read with interest that Archaeologists working for the National Trust in Avebury have discovered an arc of megaliths that may have belonged to the famous site. They took a geological survey measuring density and found some 15 stones beneath the ground within the circle. Although size and shapes need to be confirmed, they show up clearly as computer images.
Martin Papworth, trust archaeologist for the Wessex region comments, “This is a truly exciting find, and were erected around 4,500 years ago”.
Archaeologists have often been puzzled by the complex since its discovery by John Aubrey 300 years ago. A 1720s map showed many stones in the SE and NE Quadrants were missing. Alexander Keiller, who purchased the site in the 1930s concentrated his efforts in the west half of the circle. Papworth suggests the new stones may have been buried by pious 13th /14th century locals.
The National Trust has no current plans to excavate but may use ground radar to conjure up computer images of what might have been. I myself can’t wait, as the site holds a special place in my heart.
