Quarry company agrees to move
Part of the Derbyshire landscape has been saved from quarrying after a company agreed to give up its rights to work in the area. Glebe Mines has rights to mine for fluorspar in the eastern part of Longstone Edge near Calver.
Despite environmental concerns, the rights lasted for the next 40 years.
But it has now agreed with the Peak District National Park Authority that it will mine a smaller site at Winster Moor instead.
Precise conditions
John Davies from the Peak Park hopes the public will welcome the agreement.
He said: "People have been very much opposed to quarrying on Longstone Edge.
It is a very sensitive site.
"In the case of Winster there has been very little public concern about the
proposed work.
"It is subject to very precise conditions and the land being restored
afterwards."
