Re: Archaeologists targeting Mound House by Anonymous on Monday, 27 October 2003

Hi, again:

This also puts me in mind of the Santee Indian Mound at the Santee National Wildlife Refuge, Fort Watson, South Carolina. Also a Revolutionary War site, the mound was used as a fort by the British in 1781 and was captured by the Americans. The site is said to be the largest largest Native American ceremonial site discovered on the coastal plain to date.

My understanding is that some Indian shell mounds may have been destroyed in laying down the nearby highway.

All the best

Chris George
