Far from being unknown, the Coate stone circle was listed by Aubrey Burl thirty years ago in the gazetteer of 'Stone Circles of the British Isles'. Having visited this site with friends several years ago, the only remains of the circle we could see was an arc of 4 flat (fallen?) stones being kept company by horses. Not a photogenic circle!
