The presumption of innocence is now a thing of the past. The bogus argument used to defend Identity Cards, 'if you have done nothing wrong, you have nothing to fear,' is entirely false. It is liberty itself that is at stake here, in which we are increasingly discovering that 'Silence is a Vote'.
Take the issue of terrorism, not one of us knows how much of a threat is involved. Certainly, in my daily life, my doings and affairs, it's a non-event, but we are told it threatens the stability of the world. What utter nonsense, yet we are fed an almost daily diet of preventative mis-information, the world turns ugly in our minds and becomes a place of fear and danger.
Living is not and never should be entirely safe, risk and danger are as vital to us as breathing or else why climb mountains, kayak down rapids, go snow boarding? We need challenge. But today challenge has turned sinister and ugly. George Orwell must be turning in his grave. As yet we still have the power and the means to affect what is going on, despite all the government is doing to silence us, protest is alive and well in the human spirit and long may it survive. Many of us we are perhaps a little rusty, maybe it is time to hone the edge of our ability to protest and use it.
