Dundon Beacon Barrow
Dundon Beacon Barrow submitted by caradoc68 : Not many of these round barrows are left in Somerset can only think of a few sites Small Down Camp and the barrow always seems to be on top of hills. Thing what strikes me about this barrow there seems to be a ditch and back a round one edge and l cant decide whether its from the barrow or the hillfort. Looking at this ditch it seems to be part of the iron age palisade, just a observation !! (Vote or comment on this photo)

Re: Dundon Beacon Barrow by Anonymous on Sunday, 22 May 2011
I first visited Dundon Beacon in the early 1980's, approx 1982, when I was taken to see - on the slopes of the hill - a small plateau with a large inverted pentagram inscribed into the ground with candle stubs at the points. I don't know whereabouts it was but I think the southern end, and no idea if it still remains.

This doesn't feel to me like a round barrow such as you would find on the Mendip Hills, it is steep sided and appears to be made of stones under the thin turf covering, rather like a cairn. It is built into the earthworks of the Iron Age hillfort and is possibly the base for the beacon fires.
