Rock Art in West Yorkshire

As well as the magnificent Cow and Calf Rocks, there are a number of scheduled rock art boulders, rocks and stones in the immediate vicinity. This page acts as a summary of all the Cow and Calf sites, although more details can be found on individual sites pages (see the nearby sites list below).

See the Visit Bradford website for more details of the Cow and Calf Rocks (also known as Hanginstone Rocks).

To differentiate the different rock art panels, each has been given a separate page on the Portal - Cow and Calf 01, Cow and Calf 02, etc, which are also recorded by England's Rock Art (see the individual site pages for details and links).

Cow and Calf Rocks
Cow and Calf Rocks submitted by andy_h : The most prominent landmark for miles around. There are no visible megalithic remains at this huge rock outcrop, but local folklore refers to this being a place worthy of strong consideration. I've always found it a little strange that as the most prominent landmark for miles around, the Cow n' Calf didn't bear any cup n' ring marks as they can be found both to the left and the right of the out... Cow and Calf 06
Cow and Calf 06 submitted by Rich32 : Stone recorded as 'Cow and Calf 06' on ERA and 314 in 'Prehistoric Rock Art of the West Riding' The stone has three 'cup-like' depressions and a bowl. In this shot, the 'Cow and Calf' can be seen in the background. Image captured August 2009. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Cow and Calf 09
Cow and Calf 09 submitted by Rich32 : The rather dubious 'Cow and Calf 09' on ERA. Not one of the projects best finds with its possible, but unlikely single cup mark. The initial identification may have been swayed by overly kind lighting conditions and other definite carvings in the immediate vicinity. Image captured 16 November 2011. Cow and Calf 07
Cow and Calf 07 submitted by Rich32 : Stone referenced 'Cow and Calf 07' on ERA. Not a particularly exciting panel with its probable single cup mark. The two people in the background (I'm on the left) are recording either 'Cow and Calf 04' or '05' Image captured 11 November 2011. Cow and Calf 08
Cow and Calf 08 submitted by Rich32 : Carving referenced 'Cow and Calf 08' on ERA and 310 in 'Prehistoric Rock Art of the West Riding' This stone sits at the junction of two tracks and has three cup marks. Image captured in April 2011.

Cow and Calf 05
Cow and Calf 05 submitted by Rich32 : Carving referenced 'Cow and Calf 05' on ERA and 313 in 'Prehistoric Rock Art of the West Riding'. Although not apparent in this shot, the stone has 15 cups carved in two rows. Image captured 3 July 2013. Cow and Calf 04
Cow and Calf 04 submitted by Rich32 : Carving referenced 'Cow and Calf 04' on ERA and 312 in 'Prehistoric Rock Art of the West Riding'. This image was captured in August 2009 and shows the top of the stone.

Cow and Calf 03
Cow and Calf 03 submitted by Rich32 : Possible alternative for Cow and Calf 03 and 308 in 'Prehistoric Rock Art of the West Riding'. This stone is a few metres east of the one identified by the CSI: Rombalds Moor team, and fits in better with other 'carvings' identified by English Heritage during their 1994 Monument Protection Programme surveys. Whether either stone is actually carved is open to question. Image captured Aug... (1 comment)

Cow and Calf 03
Cow and Calf 03 submitted by Rich32 : Stone recorded as Cow and Calf 03 on ERA. The CSI: Rombalds Moor team recorded this believing it be the stone identified by English Heritage during the Monument Protection Programme surveys in 1994 and later referenced 308 in 'Prehistoric Rock Art of the West Riding'. I'm not convinced it's the correct one though. Image Credit: Carved Stone Investigations: Rombalds Moor Volunteers / En...

Cow and Calf 02
Cow and Calf 02 submitted by Rich32 : Reference Cow and Calf 02 on ERA and 306 in 'Prehistoric Rock Art of the West Riding'. This small stone next to one of the main tracks above the Cow and Calf has 2 cups. Image captured August 2009.

Cow and Calf 01
Cow and Calf 01 submitted by Rich32 : Referenced Cow and Calf 01 on ERA and 304 in 'Prehistoric Rock Art of the West Riding'. The single cup sits at the far end of the stone in this picture. Image captured August 2009.

Cow and Calf Rocks
Cow and Calf Rocks submitted by Anne T : A slightly different view, focusing more on the rock outcrop. On the quarry face behind these rocks climbers were roped up. I wonder what the view from the top was like, but then I'm not good at being on top of high, exposed places!

Cow and Calf Rocks
Cow and Calf Rocks submitted by Anne T : Came across these photographs of the Cow and Calf whilst sorting through some of my digital photographs. The views across to Ilkley were great.

Cow and Calf 10
Cow and Calf 10 submitted by andy_h : A small boulder near the Cow and Calf Rocks bearing a cup and double ring. You have to dive in and out of the bracken to find this, but it is just off the path leading behind the Cow and Calf. SE1335 4645
