TheCaptain visited on 29th May 2005 - their rating: Cond: 5 Amb: 5 Access: 5 This magnificent museum is found in the old city of Rodez, inside a beautiful old building which is as much part of the museum as all the collections of items within it. The museum is perhaps best known for its superb collection of statue menhirs, extremely well presented on the top floor, but there is much more besides.

This magnificent museum is found in the old city of Rodez, high up on the hilltop. It is a museum created originally by some private collectors of all things ancient from the south Aveyron region, and is housed in a couple of splendid old houses of the old town, just off the main city square, which are worthy museum pieces in their own right.

The museum visit starts at the top, and progresses down the floors, becoming more modern as one descends. For the readers of this website, the floor of interest is the top floor, which has, along with a large collection and display of Neolithic items and finds from local dolmens, the most wonderful collection of Statue Menhirs from the southern parts of Aveyron. Offhand without my details, I think they have 26 on display, all recovered from their places of discovery, and kept here for safe keeping, with a replica placed in their original position. I have to say that I thought these statue menhirs are amongst the most moving and wonderful ancient things I have seen, generally reckoned to have been from around 2500-3000BC, and representative of both male and female form. The Queen of them all is without doubt the Dame-de-Saint-Sernin, with who I was falling in love, and wanting to take home with me.

The next floor down moves forward in time, and has displays of Gallic and Roman period articles, which were almost equally of interest, and below that there is lots of renaissance period stuff.

The museum also has lots of conference and temporary exhibition space, which at the time of my visit had an extremely interesting display of writing throughout the ages, and had on show all sorts of items from ancient clay tablets from Babylonia right up to a few computer items. Fascinating.

And as with many of the museums I have seen in France, they are very keen on getting people involved with their displays, especially children and school parties, for which they have an activities room. I looked in there and they have amongst other things an area for the children to construct their own statue menhirs, using a big box of foam, cloth and Velcro parts. I was instantly attracted to the last made item, which looked like a sort of Humpty Dumpty character. Another masterstroke of getting the children interested in this sort of thing, rather than just a static display of things.

There is also a shop with a good selection of books and other items.

I thought this was a tremendous way to get the kids interested in the wonderful things they have on show upstairs. (1 comment - Vote or comment on this photo)
