Dean Moor Enclosed Settlement submitted by davep : Dean Moor Enclosed Settlement seen on the far bank. Photo taken 25/03/2016. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Enclosed settlement on Dean Moor, Dartmoor excavated between 1954 and 1956, prior to construction of the reservoir.

Prehistoric walled enclosure containing at least 13 huts together with pens. Parallels have been drawn with the settlement at Kestor. Part of the prehistoric settlement was incorporated into a medieval farmstead (MDV14221). Part of site now flooded by Avon Reservoir. See also: Pastscape Monument No. 441405/NMR record: SX 66 NE 19 and HER record: 14799.

The Northern Antiquarian also feature a page for this site - see their entry for Avon Reservoir, Dean Moor, South Brent, Devon which gives a brief archaeology & history, including an extract of excavation notes from 1957.

This enclosed settlement is also featured on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website - see their entry for the Dean Moor Enclosed Settlement.

This site is also scheduled as Historic England List ID 1003828 (Hut circles and two enclosures on Dean Moor, near River Avon).

The Pastscape Monument No. 441405 link no longer works. Am trying to find an alternative and will update the SID once I've found it. Thanks.

Think you will find that many of the old Pastscape (and other) links put on these pages no longer work! One of the great internet problems, with people always being updated and changed !
