Sweyne's Howes South
Sweyne's Howes South submitted by pab : With the heather and ferns surprisingly low around Sweyne's Howes South, things look very promising for the Portal's guided walk programme on 20th & 21st July 2013. Photo: 4th July 2013 (Vote or comment on this photo)
Remains of a once a huge construction on the slopes of Rhossili Down at the western end of the Gower peninsula.

From Coflein NPRN 93012: "An oval cairn, 20.7m by 14.9m and 0.7m high. An "inner cairn" of more massive stones may represent an original wedge-shaped structure, at its N end several large slabs may have formed a forecourt arrangement, or have been connected with the expected chamber."

The Journal of Antiquities also features a page for both burial chambers - see their entry for Sweyne’s Howes, Rhossili, Gower Peninsula, Wales, which includes a photograph, directions for finding the site, background information about Sweyne and a list of reference sources for more information.

The derivation of this name (and the south monument) is interesting. It comes from a Viking (possibly Irish) warlord called Sweyne (or Swain) who gave his name to Swansea, Sweyne's-ey or Sweyne's Sea depending on the source.
