Ahu Te Pito Kura
Ahu Te Pito Kura submitted by mattchapman : Site in Easter Island Toppled Moai on the Ahu . 2012 (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ruinous Ahu in Perose bay. An older name for the island is Te Pito Te Henua - The Navel of the World, and here at the western end of the Ahu surrounded by a low stone wall can be found the navel stone.

This round boulder is considered the navel of the island. Legend states that when Hoto Matua landed on the island having travelled from his home land of Hiva he brought with him this sacred stone. The stone was part of a larger monument for which he sent a canoe back to Hiva to retrieve the missing pieces. But when the canoe returned he was told that the crew were unable find Hiva as it had sunk beneath the sea and vanished. They were now alone.

The Ahu is pretty ruinous with its Moai toppled landwards and the ahu itself, while not in terrible state, shows signs of wear. The Navel stone itself sits in its enclosure by the shore as the waves wash in from its sunken home land.
