Mihintale Temple
Mihintale Temple submitted by PAB : Mihintale Temple - this peak is revered as being the place where Buddhism was 'born' in Sri Lanka with the King becoming a Buddhist in 247 B.C. With the handrail too hot to touch barehanded, and the ground almost at scorching point (and, as at most such sites, no shoes allowed!), it was a memorable climb, but worth doing. Ancient buddhist temple and monastery in Sri Lanka.

Ancient buddhist temple and monastery of the 3rd century BCE on a hill (Missaka Pabbata). The 5th century CE was the golden age of the monastery almost 2000 monks were living there.
